Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.
On this Blog you will find up-to-date records and pictures.
I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.
Please also check out the links in the sidebar to the right for other people's Blogs and informative Websites.
Thanks for looking and happy Mothing!

Getting ready for the new season

Hello all.

With traps primed with new bulbs, white sheets washed and pots cleaned, I am nearly ready for the season to start and to get out about again trapping in a variety of habitats.

Also I just had to get the new Chris Manley book, and although at the end of the day it is just 'pretty pictures' this 2nd volume goes to a great length of featuring more micro moth pictures, in fact over 800 new species have been added to this edition.
And being hardback it will accompany me on field trips out for when I have a brain lapse about that difficult micro moth name.

The 50 egg trays (which I bought for £15.96 all in which I didn't think was too bad) are a must as a lot of my old ones are falling apart from being dried out far too much over the past few seasons!

Trap on tonight but it is wet again and the wind is getting up....

  3. Hi Ben, cor, that book really is a work of art - looks beautiful! Glad to see you getting all set for the new season :o). In case it is of interest, I've just launched a new nature blog which will include sightings on Box Moor Trust land (web address http://naturalworldnotes.blogspot.co.uk). Here's to the Spring!
    All the best

  4. Thanks Angie, Lee, yes I think it is worth it at least to help point you in the right direction of what area you are looking at for your identification in hand. The information is pretty sparse and the maps are out of date for many species.
Lucy, yep nearly all set, need to get David to check the generator (although he may have already done this) Brilliant, I will look at it now and link it to my blog and hopefully you may get some more traffic and help promote it more.
    All the best.
    Ben
